February News
~ Two very successful Literacy events happened last week; “Bring a favorite adult to read day” and PJ night. We want to thank all the families who came out to celebrate reading with us. Our library has some treasured student written books that have been created over the years. Some parents even found pieces of their writing from years past! They were a tremendous hit.
~ Families looking to drop off items for the Loonie Auction this Sunday, February 12th can do so at the school office or bring them to the council hall the day of the auction. All items are appreciated. Money raised goes towards the cultural program, field trips and gym equipment.
~ A big thank-you to PAC for their financial contribution towards the grade 5 ski trip, the grade 6/7 bowling trip and purchasing the new sports pinnies for the school. Your endless support fundraising and bringing your school concerns to our monthly meeting is appreciated.
~ As a heartfelt treat, Ms. Cook and Karen Reece will be cooking a pancake breakfast for the students on Valentine’s Day, Tuesday, Feb. 14th. Breakfast will be served when the student’s day starts. Bring your appetite!
~ A two year in the making event will take place February 24th in the Fort Rupert Big House; the official signing of the School District 85 Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement with all the local bands in our area. Students from grade 2 to 7 will be attending. In order to arrive on time to meet the canoes and enter the Bighouse on time, our group will be leaving Alert Bay at 7:50am on the NIAD and the school foot ferry.

Purdy’s Chocolate catalogues are in. Those of you wishing to order can pick up a catalogue from “Lookin’ Good”, or phone the school and we can send one home with your child. To make ordering easier you can also order on-line. The instructions on how to do this are on the front of the catalogue. PAC meets the first Wednesday of every month. All parents are welcome.
A Few Reminders
There is a collection of coats and hoodies in the office that no one is claiming. We have been around to the classes trying to find the owners. The weather is getting cooler and I am sure they are needed in some homes.
The cooler weather has been accompanied by rain. The field holds water. We ask students not to play on the field on certain days. There are many other areas to play. Unfortunately a number of students still love to run out onto the field and get wet. We asked that you review this with your child.
Guided Reading
All children have been put into school wide guided reading groups. We know from research and our own experiences that having children reading and discussing books at their reading level is the best practice for improving reading comprehension
Lice
Here are some tips from Public Health that will help deter head lice:
1. Don’t store coats together or share hats, combs, scarves or personal items.
2. Long hair should be tied back in pony tails or braids.
3. Lice don’t like hair gel
4. Parents should wet comb their children’s hair on a regular basis as a preventative measure.
5. Beware of sharing Halloween costumes or wigs.

This year our whole school will continue with a Guided Reading program. Guided reading enables the teacher to move students through a selected text, mod-elling, reinforcing and providing positive informative feedback on the use of specific reading strategies. It involves the teacher working with a small group of students who are at the same or similar reading level. If you would like more information about your child’s reading program, don’t hesitate to contact us.
Our relationship with students and their families is extremely important to us. Feel free to phone teachers or myself anytime with concerns or questions. If we are teaching, leave a message and we will return your call. We also have an “open door” policy in our school. Come in and enjoy the class.
